Kanchipuram in Tamilnadu is world renowned for silk weaving industry. Silk and cotton products are majorly produced in this region. Similarly, few families of Kanchipuramare engaged in Lungi weaving.Lungi is an unstitched cotton material of 2 meters in length traditionally worn by men. Cotton Lungi is particularly worn in regions where the heat and humidity create an unpleasant climate for trousers.Fine cotton threads are processed in various stages such as cleaning, warping and spinning. The prepared warp beam is loaded into basic and very simple pit loom which does not have any jacquard machine attachments and punch cards. Colored threads are arranged inparallel along with warp threads to create simple color line patters in Lungi.
The cotton weaving is also highly practiced in other parts of Tamilnadu like Coimbatore, Salem, Madura, Thanjavur, Tirunelveli and SankaranKoil.
