India is a country affluent with its enormous and innumerable traditions of art and handicraft. Motibharat is one of those inimitable crafts which is originated in India somewhere in the middle of the nineteenth century and is predominantly practiced in the Jalor district of Rajasthan but its origin can be traced to the rural part of Gujarat as well. Studies show that initially the craft was used by the cobblers and by the beginning of the twentieth century the women of the Kathi caste started practicing this art and started making household artifacts. The origin of the craft is absolutely unknown and there are not many studies and documentation that happened. The lack of study as well as the lack of knowledge of artisans is being an obstacle to tracing the legacy of the art ‘Moti Bharat’.
Sita Ben is an extremely talented as well as energetic artisan who is still indulging in the craft ‘Motibharat’ day and night, she isn’t just restricted to creating artefacts, she also works hard for keeping the craft alive. She teaches any craft enthusiast who knocks on her door. She started making artifacts at the age of seventeen and now she is fifty-eight but the age couldn’t make her weak. Like any other artisan, she is having only one vision and mission that the craft should not die and she is working hard to sustain the craft. In her words, the craft should be alive even if she isn’t there on this earth.
