Introduction

  • Printer-friendly version

Jaykat Galeecha, a multi coloured cotton carpet is woven on handloom. It is also known as Dari. It is more popular all over north India. The art has been introduced by Akbar around 1580 A.D. A Mughal Emperor brought some weavers from Iran to produce Persian carpets in his palace at Agra. Primarily carpet making was an important cottage industry in Agra, Delhi and Lahore and slowly it spread across India. Over a period of time Jammu and Kashmir, Bhadohi and the Uttar Pradesh became leading carpet producing centres in the country. Indian carpets are well known for their designs. Hand knotted carpets are in great demand in India. Generally carpets are made using cotton as a basic material. Nowadays they are knotted on cotton or silk foundations with piles of silk, wool or goats’ hair.
