Introduction
Hand embroidery is one of the oldest and richest of handicraft, which consists of decorating a piece of fabric with needle and various types of yarns, by creating intrinsic and amazingly beautiful stitches over the fabric.
Embroidery is a way of expressing oneself, rendered with patience and hard work, it is also a many times referred to art of painting with needle, it does adds up a lot of grace and core value to an everyday usable cloth. Making it special and giving it a rich and warm feel. Indian handmade embroidery takes its inspirations from the local flora and fauna, religion, motifs found in old architecture, jaali works etc., the color, base, pattern and technique says which part of India. Embroidery on leather, velvet, net, cotton and silk is done all over the country. The pattern are decided upon the basis of the fabric and its stitches, texture style and effect produced. Themes and subjects have remained same for centuries, inspiring generations after another.
Embroidery has been dated to be as old as from the time period of around 5th century, its existence is as old as that of fabric itself, believed to be originated in china. Embroideries are today almost all the time of the year through the world and in India, there are different types of embroidery all over the country which defines the individual unique region and its culture, the types of embroidery done through the region are: Aari work done in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh region, Banjara (Lambani) embroidery of Andhra Pradesh and northern Karnataka region, Banni embroidery of Gujarat, chamba rumal of Himachal Pradesh, chikkankari of Uttar Pradesh and west Bengal, Gota, pichwai, mirrorwork, rabari work of Rajasthan and Gujarat Kantha Stitches of West Bengal, Karbochi, Zari & Zardozi Stitches used by Mughal Emperors which are more or less inspired by indo Persian style of designs, Kasuti embroidery of Karnataka, Kashida stitches of Kashmir, Phulkari of Punjab region, pipli work of Orissa all these are few of the examples of how a simple thought on embroidery has taken a huge cultural and craft vibrant variations according to the region people live in.
