Coir is hooked to the spinning wheel to make the lengthy yarn. As the spinning wheel starts rotating, the artisan walks backwards by adding minimum amount of coir to the forming yarn. Once the required length of yarn is formed, spinning is stopped. Then two coir strands are joined and entwined together using a wooden tool to make the rope thicker. Coir rope is sturdy and long-lasting. The rope is further marketed to cater in and around areas of Hiriyur and also to coir weaving industries to make coir mats.
