Woolen carpets of Dharchula are characterized by their unique pile structure, vivid colors and bold patterns, highlighted both by the particular qualities of the high mountain sheep wool. The patterns and motives used are mainly drawn from the Tibetan and Buddhist vocabulary and others influenced by Chinese figurative arts like the dragon and the Great Wall of China. Wool is traditionally bought from Dehradun. Small industries sell the dyed wool in the local market. Weaving is mainly done by women artisans.

The designs fall into two categories- stylized geometric motifs and floral and dragon designs. Vibrant colored woolen threads are used to make the carpet look attractive. It takes months to complete one carpet weaving. Once the weaving is complete the carpet is washed with detergent and dried in the sun. The carpet is stretched on all sides and is tied over a metal frame for about a day to ensure its proper shape and size. The finished rug is now ready for packing.
